Canada Files | What I Like
- I will say, Canadian TV is awesome!
- The normal broadcast channels have swearing, gratuitous violence and sex
- Movies are broadcast unedited
- HBO and Showtime programming is also rebroadcast on network channels
- There is a channel that shows softcore porn all night long
- On certain nights, there is a channel that shows hardcore porn at night
- I have learned to love putting vinegar on my french fries
- I like the fact that all of the Blockbuster Video stores use a universal card – you don’t have to get a different card for each separate store that you visit
- Canadians are just *really* nice people. The stereotypes are true. While it seems a little unnatural, surreal and frankly just plain wrong at first, it is a good thing.
- Canadians recycle *everything* – that grew a little irritating actually
- Their cops actually enforce their DUI laws – heck, I’ve been stopped at sobriety checkpoints (where they stop *all* cars that pass through) at least 4 times over the course of a year. In 14 years, I’ve *never* been stopped in the US
- Canadians are certainly better international citizens than Americans are – they are members of more international treaties and organizations, they better adhere to the treaties that they are a part of and they don’t back out of treaties when it is convenient for them…
- Even little spud towns like Powell River can attract top quality singing talent from all over the world for their annual choral festival
- The way Canada treats their native folks is quite amazing to me. The aboriginal folks are taken seriously, their treaties are actually honored and large settlements are made on that basis. I was pretty surprised to learn that the native population is the fastest growing group in BC. This is amazing, I don’t think that there is a place in the US where the native population is *not* the fastest shrinking population.
